Former VH-1 Reality Series song stress Maiya Sykes and Singer Songwriter for Days of Our Lives Jd Webb were the perfect marriage of Rock and Soul at “The Light” a new showcase at the The Ivar Theatre’s Brick Box Space in Hollywood
– Club Review By Eugenia Wright, kleopatragirl writer

Neo soul Singer Maiya Sykes, the beautiful 26-year-old who became a familiar face to millions from VH-1’s “Bands on the Run” kept it real Thursday night, March 09th as she belted out her tunes showing off her incredible voice with smooth and soulful licks and sexy moves at her new showcase “The Light” at the Ivar Theatre’s Brick Box space. This voluptuous diva let everyone see that big girls are sensuous. She was working her body hitting the down beat, bomp de bomp, and displaying mega divalucious attitude. Her captivating smoldering hazel colored eyes were doing some work of their own, beckoning “come over and see me sometime.” She was truly amazing. No one, but no one can touch Maiya’s style of performance.

Jd Webb’s Stingesque appeal brought the house down along with Maiya for the perfect blend of Rock and Soul. This white boy can sang. Together they shook up the house and the audience so entranced by their music surrendered to the urge to sway and dance. Among the celebrities that turned out to support included 2 Time Emmy nominee Composer Gary Stockdale (Penn & Teller shows); Voice Over King Pin J.D. Hall (Scorpion King, Undercover Brother, Hal of Presidents); Veteran Commercial actor and stage director Justin Lord; beautiful Persian/Hispanic Actress/Model Nazanin from “R U the Girl” with T-Boz & Chili; hot new hip hop group Inner City Mob; former Stevie Wonder drummer and Dick Clark’s Entertainment VP/ Music Producer Ollie Brown and Business Entrepreneur Ann Thomas. Seasoned Music Producer Lou Nathan was also in the house. After the show, there was plenty o’ talk about contracts. Will keep you posted if any gets set down in stone. In the meantime, the Brick Box was the place to be. It was a hotbed of talent for sure. General Manager of the Ivar Sherrie Lofton converted the space once known as the Opium Den to a Manhattan style loft setting. The crowd entered through a side street entrance through an ironwork gate to a courtyard landscaped with beautiful flowering plants and trees. A massive heating lamp was strategically placed in the center. The mini bar opened up from, what appeared to be a former brick fireplace. In a gallery upstairs the works of Artist Yrneh Brown were tastefully displayed. Yrneh. a Jamaican brother has a collection of art well worth seeing. His work is colorful and intriguing. This visual artist component was a delightful added element to the show.

It was a funky get down night full of music and under the stars. Guests were treated to a wide variety of beverages. The music provided food for the soul. Maiya Sykes should be commended on a superb production of “The Light.” Everyone was asking when is the next big gig? You’ll have to stay tuned.
