The Lady
Bug
A decade after securing her place as a member
of Hip-Hop Royalty, Mecca: the Ladybug is making her way back
to the limelight spiritually grounded and domestically satisfied.
Her life and sound have evolved through her experiences since
leaving the Grammy Award-winning Digable Planets: the group
that made her one of hip-hop’s most distinct female voices.
According to Ladybug, her new self-titled album, LADYBUG MECCA,
was inspired by “…being me, the rhythm, being
poetic, the weather, love, the innocence of children, wisdom
of elders, experiences, sex, attraction, fantasy… it’s
endless really. I could go on and on.” It’s
a mature musical statement armed with the philosophy, spiritual
awareness and a solid sense of self.
Looking back at her militant past, Ladybug says, “I was
always conscious, but I was still limiting myself. I was dealing
with a revolution in a physical sense, and not in a mental sense.
It’s not gonna happen that way.” Her goal was not
to recreate the glory of the past, but to move into a new sense
of musical-freedom, something very worldly.
For Ladybug, this is an almost literal reincarnation. It is
powerful and self-actualized. She says, “I am really kind
of still getting to know my power. At this point, it’s
full throttle.”
