KwameWorld
By Eugenia Wright, kleopatragirl writer

It's hard out there for a comedian. Well, at least that's how the story goes in KwameWorld a new sitcom starring Kwame Koonson. If you haven't heard about him you will.

Last night I attended the premiere screening of this new TV show about the adventures of Kwame a young man from E. Baltimore trying desperately to make it as a comedian in the "Big Orange." L A lifestyle, when you have no money, is dismal especially when Beverly Hills is just a little west of the Pink hot dog stand. You’re close, but yet so far from the filet mignon. In the story, Kwame seems out of place trying to find his niche.  He tries his luck performing at the world-famous Comedy Store, but is booed and jeered by the peanut gallery in the Belly Room (and it you’ve ever been to the Belly Room you know the mini stage is just two arm lengths away from the house). On this night, the audience throws all kinds of garbage at Kwame. His attempt to be like Eddie Murphy fails miserably. Kwame’s auditions run amuck too when he cites credits like "Hustle and Blow" and the director and casting director know damn well, brother, that was a credit from another planet. At this point the viewer could question is this comedy or farce?

In real life Kwame Koonson has talent as a stand-up and has traveled the comedy circuit opening up for David Chappelle, Eddie Griffin, Joe and Guy Torry and others. As a television star trying to land a high-rated series is a horse of a different color and only time will tell.

The club setting was not the best place to critique a screening because everyone seemed to be more interested in partying, but I do want to see more, so, let’s give Kwame a break here and just say, the show has great potential. One thing for sure, everyone always needs a good laugh and Kwame in KwameWorld seems like he can poke fun at life and at himself. There were many moments that drew hearty laughter.

Kwame did secure a big fan last night at the screening—TV Vet Roger E. Mosley who showed up at Club Mood to support the kid from B-More. Mosley spent some time giving Kwame pointers on becoming a television star. Hey, Roger should know since he is still livin’ phat from the money he made on the long-running series Magnum PI.

I’ll bet that, Kwame Koonson will not find it hard at all to make KwameWorld a television hit show. Ian Edwards (Boondocks and Where MyDogs At) is the writer.
